Summer is here! One of the few driest and sunniest places in the Pacific Northwest, Whidbey Island is experiencing our lovely weather again! We all battle the overcast and gray of the Evergreen State to make it through to these lovely (and long!) days...As I write to you all the sun is still out, and it is 904pm!

Ski2Sea 2022 Radio Interview
If you haven't seen it - I fumbled my way through a radio interview this time last year for the same event. Onward to try #2! Click the video below:

This coming weekend is the annual Ski2Sea up in Bellingham! The video above is from my radio interview from last year, and keep reading after this section to learn more about the big event - a 100 mile race from Mt. Baker to the Salish Sea! If you'll be in the area on Sunday, let me know!
The photo above is my middle kiddo, Henry. He (and his siblings) graduated from AWANA for the year, and have officially moved up to the next class! He was sick for graduation night, so we got this "virtual graduation" photo for him. The kids have to memorize a selection of the Bible, participate weekly in different events and programs that build them up in confidence (among other great things!) and learn how to share their own story, their own core values - in this case the Gospel message - with others.
Last week I put out a call for anyone interested in brainstorming a nonprofit "vacations with a purpose" ministry idea, and the Lord provided! The call is still out - and I am looking to bounce ideas, feedback, guidance, people to partner with, etc. If this is an idea that interests you - let me know!
If you ask my Dad about Grasser's Hill, he can actually give you the story and the history as he tells you all about it and the surrounding Penn Cove. If you ask me, I'll point you to the field full of grass where they currently live, where I spent my final grade-school years, and where my own children and cousins now play. Can you find them hiding below? There's never a dull moment when surrounded by loved ones. And the act of "being surrounded by loved ones" comes from getting outside of ourselves and serving others. In an era of consumerism and "entertain me now" conditioning, it's no wonder so many of us suffer from "consumption" (I know I know, Consumption is actually what we used to call Tuberculosis, but roll with me here - the modern "consumption" is death-by-distraction. Needing stimulation consistently and constantly...) - so, how do we break that cycle? Take a moment right now to make a note of the whom you will serve this week. One human, one time, something out of the ordinary. It's not just the act that heals, it's the thinking about the how, the prepping for it, and then the doing. It's a salve that saves from the routine of the directionless race. For me? It's helping my folks prep the property this weekend for the upcoming Memorial Day BBQ they host for 100+ people involved in the Navigator ministry. What will you do?

Ski2Sea is Celebrating 50 Years!

Let's take a look at what exactly this event is and why so many Washingtonians and Canadians love it! Here's a clip from 2020's race.

First run in 1973, the Ski to Sea is a multi-sport team relay from the Mt. Baker Ski Area to Bellingham Bay. The race is held annually on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend in Whatcom County, Washington. A Ski to Sea team consists of three – eight racers competing in seven different sports: Cross Country Ski, Downhill Ski/Snowboard, Running, Road Bike, Canoe (2 paddlers), Cyclocross Bike, and Sea Kayak. Beginning in 2018, racers will be allowed to participate in up to three legs on race day, for one team or multiple teams. Teams will have a minimum of three racers and a maximum of eight. The Race course runs through the towns of Glacier, Maple Falls, Kendall, Everson, Lynden, and Ferndale, finishing at Marine Park in the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham. Together with the Historic Fairhaven Festival, Ski to Sea is the largest one-day event in Whatcom County and Bellingham, drawing racers, spectators, and tourists from the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and around the country.

The Ski to Sea Race is owned and operated by Whatcom Events, a volunteer-operated community 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Whatcom Events also hosts the Tour de Whatcom bicycle ride in July, The Mt. Baker Hill Climb in September and Trails to Taps Relay in October. We rely almost exclusively on our incredible team of more than 1000 volunteers to pull off these vibrant community events. We have three employees; our full-time Race Director, our part-time seasonal Operations Manager and our part-time volunteer and equipment coordinator. Our current Board of Directors has seven members (Mark Lee, Mike Trowbridge, Larry Bussinger, Terri Lee, Don Kurtis, Tracy Gorham and Jessa Louden) and our Race Committee is made up of over 30 members of our community, all of which are uncompensated volunteers. Each year, we hope that our volunteer efforts and the generosity of our sponsors results in net profits that we can donate to local 501(c)(3) charitable beneficiaries. Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors, we have been able to return over $133,700 to our community since we began in 2011, in the form of donations.
