The history of Anacortes can be traced back to the 1890s when the town’s early fishing industry was based on schooners that sailed to the Bering Sea and back with tons of salted cod in tow. Mechanized salmon processing began in 1894 at the Fidalgo Island Canning Company, and expanded to 11 seafood canneries operating along the swift-moving Guemes Channel, allowing Anacortes to become known as the Salmon Canning Capital of the World.

It also offers commuters convenient access to the I-5 corridor (Bellingham and Seattle) and the Deception Pass Bridge conveniently connects Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island.

Known as the gateway to the San Juan Islands, Anacortes is a popular stopover destination and haven for renters and retirees alike. This seaside sanctuary attracts vacationers with its whale-watching tours, kayaking excursions, sailing, boating, birding, fishing, crabbing, hiking, and biking opportunities—to name just a few! The south side of Fidalgo Island is also home to Deception Pass State Park, the most visited state park in Washington.

Deception Pass State Park, Washington's most-visited state park, is popular among locals and international travelers alike—and for good reason. It boasts coves, rugged cliffs, stunning sunsets, fishing, forest trails, miles of Puget Sound beachfront, and bird, seal, and whale-watching. Towering above the waters of Deception Pass, the impressive Deception Pass Bridge fostered the eventual placement of NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor and is now a cherished spectacle. Rosario Beach, located within the park, features wide beaches, picnic areas set amongst old-growth trees and wildflower meadows, and a story pole carving of Kwuh-kwal-uhl-wut. Other notable parks include Washington Park—home to the Fidalgo Loop Trail—and Cap Sante Park.
